The new regulation 2022/2338 sets maximum levels in micrograms/kg fresh food weight for PFOS, PFOA, PFNA and PFHxS and their sum. Among the regulated foods are eggs, meat, fish, crustaceans, molluscs, and offal of various species.
The Authority concluded that PFOS, PFOA, PFNA and PFHxS can cause developmental damage and have harmful effects on the immune system. It therefore established a group tolerable weekly intake (TWI) of 4.4 ng/kg body weight per week for the sum of PFOS, PFOA, PFNA and PFHxS, which also protects against the other effects of these substances.
