Carrefour imposes Nutriscore on all its suppliers
Carrefour in France is extending the use of the Nutriscore to all food products, asking suppliers to publish their nutritional data on the Carrefour.fr website. Brands that do not adhere will be excluded from promotional tools and the “alternative for better eating” function, which helps customers choose healthier products. Carrefour has announced that, in the absence of the requested information, it will calculate the Nutriscore independently based on the available nutritional data. Suppliers have three months to contest the request.
The Nutriscore, developed in France, uses a colored label to indicate nutritional quality, taking into account fruits, vegetables, fiber, proteins, energy, sugars, saturated fats and sodium. This system has been introduced on Carrefour brand products in France since 2019. In Italy, its use is limited due to an antitrust requirement, which includes a note to clarify that the algorithm on which it is based is not universally shared.
The initiative is part of the Act for Food program, which promotes transparency and informed food choices. Carrefour has also set the goal, for 2026, to exclude suppliers without a climate strategy from its stores.
