Water management and innovation: Tomato Water kicks off in Northern Italy
The Tomato Water project, launched by the Interprofessional Organization (OI) Pomodoro da Industria Nord Italia, is starting, aiming to optimize the management of water resources in the industrial tomato supply chain. With a budget of 400.000 euros and 90% financing under the PSR Emilia-Romagna 2023-2027 Call, the initiative will last three years.
The main objective is to analyze the water needs of the supply chain and compare them with the availability of water in the main production areas of northern Italy (Piacenza, Parma and Ferrara). This approach will allow to prevent any imbalances and optimize the use of water resources, especially in critical areas or periods.
A Temporary Association of Purpose was established on November 13, involving 23 partners, including producers, universities, research institutions and land reclamation consortia. The OI will coordinate the project, while the OP-Producer Organizations will collect data on water needs. The land reclamation consortia will provide updated information on water reserves, and the Catholic University of Piacenza, together with CER-Canale Emiliano Romagnolo, will develop tools to assess the balance between water supply and demand. The spin-off Vsafe will examine the economic implications of management strategies in case of scarcity.
Tomato Water represents a significant step towards the sustainability of the tomato supply chain, strengthening dialogue with institutions and contributing to innovation in water resource management, which is crucial to addressing the challenges posed by climate change.
