The Dop Economy Resists: 52% Growth in Ten Years

The Italian PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) economy remains strong in 2023, with a production value of 20.2 billion euros (+0.2%), reflecting a 52% growth over the past decade and a 19% share of the total agri-food turnover. This system is supported by 317 protection consortia, which coordinate 194,000 businesses and provide employment for around 850,000 people.
According to the XII Ismea-Qualivita Report, the food sector grew by 3.5%, exceeding 9 billion euros, driven by iconic cheeses like Grana Padano and Mozzarella di Bufala Campana. In contrast, the wine sector saw a 2.3% decrease in value, reaching 11 billion euros. Exports amounted to 11.6 billion euros (+5.3% within the EU, -4.6% outside the EU), with food exports growing (+0.7%) while wine exports declined (-0.6%).
The territorial impact is clear: 61 provinces recorded improvements in PDO economic values, with significant growth in the South (+4%). Leading PDO products by production value include Grana Padano (+8.8%), Parmigiano Reggiano (-7%), and Pecorino Romano (+30.8%).
Spending on PDO products in large-scale retail (GDO) increased by 7.2% (reaching 5.9 billion euros), supported by higher prices, even though volumes were slightly reduced.
